What is lung cancer? |
A lung is a pair of large organs in chest. They are part of respiratory system. The lungs allow us to fill blood with oxygen. Usually, when the cells get old or damages, they die and are replaced by new cells. Sometimes, cells continue to grow and divide when they aren’t needed, causing an abnormal growth called a tumor. Lung cancer is the cells in lungs start to grow in an uncontrolled way and form tumor. Tumors are lumps of tissue made up of abnormal cells. Besides interfering with how the lung functions, cancer cells can spread from the tumor into bloodstream or lymphatic system where they can spread to other organ.
What is a type of Lung Cancer? |
Lung cancers have two types that are small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. These two types of lung cancer develop differently.
- Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer, making up eighty percent of all cases. Usually, it grows and spreads more slowly than small cell lung cancer (SCLC). NSCLC is stages based on the size of the primary tumor and if and where the cancer has spread (stages I,II,III,IV).
Stage I : The cancer is located only in the lungs and has not spread to any lymph nodes.
Stage II : The cancer is in the lung and nearby lymph nodes.
Stage III : Cancer is found in the lung and in the lymph nodes in the middle of the chest.
Stage IV : This is very dangerous stage of lung cancer and is also described as advanced disease. This is when the cancer has spread to both lungs, to fluid in the area around the lungs, or to another part of the body, such as the liver or other organs.
- Small Cell Lung Cancer
Small cell lung cancer is also called oat cell which usually caused by smoking, It is very rare for who has never smoked to develop it. It grows more rapidly and spreads to other part of the body earlier than non-small cell lung cancer.
Limited stage: At this stage, cancer is found on one side of the chest, involving just one part of the lung and nearby lymph nodes.
Extensive stage: At this stage, cancer has spread to other regions of the chest or other parts of the body.
